Cultivating Hope in Welioya
On the 4th of October, the Rotary Club of Colombo Centennial took a bold first step in addressing one of Sri Lanka’s most urgent needs — sustainable food security. 🌾✨
In the rural farming community of Welioya, the club launched a pilot cultivation project by distributing a variety of seeds, including ladies’ fingers, cooking melon, pumpkin, green gram, beans, and long beans. Alongside the handover, members also planted trees — a living symbol of Rotary’s long-term commitment to farming and reforestation. 🌳
For these families, each seed represents more than food — it’s hope for stability, nutrition, and self-reliance. What begins as a handful of seeds today will soon grow into a harvest that strengthens the entire community.
This is just the first step in a broader plan to promote cultivation at scale — empowering families to grow sustainably and build resilience against economic and climate challenges. 💚
